I was a bit surprised to see how bummed out and depressed people were. I guess I expected “bummed out”, but not utterly depressed. I was reading friends’ statuses on facebook this morning and seeing a common theme. I wondered why I was not so down like everyone else. I then remembered my favorite scripture, Helaman 5:12:

And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

I put on my facebook status that I was “surprisingly happy” with a link to that scripture. I had a couple of old friends thank me for putting that status. It didn’t really occur to me that it might help lift someone out there.

Rachel was still a little bummed this morning – not scared like last night. She said she was at the library with Gehrig this morning and he kept singing, “Onward, ever onward… forward, pressing forward…”, and that lifted her spirits.
