When we moved in, the water line to the fridge wasn’t working. We noticed there was some water damage behind the fridge from a past leak. Ken installed a new water line to our fridge and one night it popped off and we had water spraying everywhere. Unfortunately it warped our hard wood floor that we had stained and refinished before moving it. It was livable though.

I went to home depot a few times and did some internet research to figure out how to install the water line so it wouldn’t happen again. I managed to re-install it and there were no leaks and things were working properly… well for about 3 weeks.

On day Rache notice that Our ceiling in the basement was wet. She didn’t pay much attention until it got much worse. I just happen to be in the office on that day and forgot my cell phone, so I had no clue what was going on. When I got home, I saw all kinds of water damage on our basement ceiling and our wood floors were much worse. Apparently, my connnection didn’t hold well either, it didn’t pop off, but it developed quite a leak.

We called a plumber and he basically just put it on “properly” as he said. I felt like I was paying him $98 to tighten a nut. But, he guaranteed his work for at least two years. That helps me sleep a little better.

But in the mean time, we didn’t feel like the new damage was something we could just live with, so we called out home insurance agent and started a claim. Someone came to assess the damage and today we had some contractors come and explain all the work they are going to do. I am happy to see that they will be doing quite a thorough job – much more than I could have accomplished.

When we had our floors sanded, stained, and varnished before we moved in, we paid just over $1000. So we know the cost of that alone. They will be doing much more. Our deductible is $1000. I can see why Dave Ramsey suggests we have that amount as a “mini emergency fund” as we are working to pay off debts. It keeps us from going into more debt in situations like these.

Also, when the stain our floors, we can’t be in the house for a few days. Insurance is also going to cover hotel and addition food expenses. While it is a hassle to go through this and I would rather it not have happened, I’m so glad our insurance company is taking care of us!
