I worked from home yesterday to go to a follow-up visit for my back epidural. It also gave me the chance to look at some rentals in the afternoon and during lunch. We then drove up to Farmington & Layton to look at some new homes that were move-in ready. The Farmington house was nice, but kind of small and no room for growth because it didn’t have a basement. The houses in West Layton were nice, but felt too far out west and still seemed like the daily commute would be too long. The house we looked at in East Layton was really nice. It was Rachel’s favorite and I think she was ready to buy that one. But I didn’t really like how small the lot was and after driving around the area I noticed a lot of run down apartment buildings and businesses and so I didn’t really like the area. I think Rachel felt the same way after I expressed it, and she didn’t like how far north it was. We determined we would pay a bit more for Farmington if we could find something in our price range.

Rachel spent the morning looking for lots and builders in Farmington and scheduled some showings. Also, the agent we met with about the home called about the house in East Layton because Rachel asked if they could do hardy board all the way around the house instead of stucco on the sides and back. They were planning on starting the stucco today. I told him we loved that home, but we decided we didn’t want to be in Layton. He said that that builder had some lots in Farmington so we scheduled that as well.

The first homes we saw tonight were nice, and would probably work for use, but they were on a pretty busy street. The cheaper of the two that we liked more was about 360k. But it was a corner lot on a busy street, so we weren’t really that interested.

The second house we looked at was in Woods Cross. It was a community with very small lots. We walked into the kitchen and saw the laminate counter-tops and laminate flooring and immediately said we weren’t interested.

So our last appointment was with the agent we met with last night. They had just paved the road today where all the lots were. They haven’t advertised any of them and two of them had already been picked out by other people, so basically we had the pick of the street. They were basically in the same subdivision as the first two homes we looked at, but back into it off the busy road. They were also bigger lots at .25 acres and much nicer homes for a similar price.

The VP of operations for the builder happened to be there checking out the newly paved street. He was very nice guy and gave us lots of good information.

Honestly this was the first time I got excited in this whole process. Rachel was also so excited. We need to put $2,000 down to reserve the lot. I told them we would sleep on it and call them in the morning. (I’ve learned that I should never let my excitement get the best of me so I always like to sleep over big decisions like this.) I’m still excited thought and I’m 95% sure we’ll reserve a lot tomorrow.

On the way home we texted the guy that has a rental home in Alpine asking if he would be willing to rent is home for 5-6 months. He said he really wanted a 1 year lease or longer.

We decided to ask Ken & Laura if we could shack up with them for 5-6 months. They agreed so now we can keep the kids in the same school and save some money for a few months while the home is being built.

It’s so nice to finally have a plan. Hopefully the sale of our house goes through or we will be very frustrated. Rachel has started packing the past few days.

Last night when we got home Rachel & I were very frustrated. Tonight is totally different. We are very excited about this.
